What's a good DJ service really worth? There are several things to consider when valuing your DJ service. The consumer price index is the averaged cost of a variety of goods and services. In 1984 it was 100. Todays index is 174.4. This is a 74.4% increase in the cost of living. In 1984, the average rate for a professional mobile DJ was about $400 for a four hour event, averaging around $100 an hour. If you take into consideration the hours we spend on event planning, meetings, transportation, set up, tear down, music research, marketing and advertising etc. based on a 40 hour work week at one party a week we gross about $10 per hour. Two parties a week equals $20 per hour. Walmart pays better and has more benefits. As professional Mobile DJs we manage: Announcements, Master of Ceremonies, Music Programmers, Audio Technicians, Event Planners, Coordinators, and more. How much would these individuals charge for each of these services? An MC alone charges between $500 to $1500 per event. Celebrities charge 10 times as much. Not everyone can successfully DJ a party.

Most people don't have the music knowledge, technical skill, sensitivity, or announcing skills. The number one fear in America today is public speaking. Every time I hand a microphone to a Best man or Maid of Honor and tell them what to do they always hold the mike at stomach level and begin their speech and no one in the room can hear them.  If you ask the Bride and Groom to thank their guests for coming its always, no you do it, no you do it, let's let Mikey do it. Sound familiar?

Not everyone is willing to do what we do on a weekly basis. At a normal Wedding reception based at $10,000 budget, the average coordinator fees are around $800 to $1200, a cake can average between $300 and $1500, meal services run about $3500 to $6000 depending on the number of guests. Of course there are flowers and other little costs involved . So a professional DJ at an average of $500 is a  steal.
